About
Robert Garcia
Born on January 29, 1975, in San Pedro, California, Robert Garcia is a Mexican-American former professional boxer turned elite trainer, whose career spans decades of success both in the ring and in the corner.
Robert grew up in the La Colonia neighborhood of Oxnard, California, in a hardworking family of Mexican descent. His father, Eduardo Garcia, labored long hours in the local strawberry fields while also running a boxing gym that began in their garage. Trained from a young age under his father at the famed La Colonia Youth Boxing Club, Robert turned professional in the 1990s, competing primarily in the super featherweight (junior lightweight) division. In 1998, he captured the International Boxing Federation (IBF) Super Featherweight World Title, defending it once before retiring in 2001 with an impressive professional record of 34 wins and 3 losses.
After hanging up the gloves, Garcia transitioned into training and quickly established himself as one of boxing’s top minds. He began coaching at the La Colonia gym before opening his own facility — the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy (RGBA) — in Oxnard.
In 2010, the Garcia family relocated inland, and RGBA began operating from a private, non-commercial location in Riverside, California. Robert and his father, Eduardo, worked closely together to guide Mikey Garcia’s championship career, remaining nearby to maintain their family’s close bond.
As a trainer, Robert Garcia has guided more than 17 world champions and elite contenders— including his younger brother Mikey Garcia, who became a multi-division world champion. In recognition of his accomplishments, Robert was named The Ring Magazine’s 2024 “Trainer of the Year.”
In 2024, Robert decided to expand RGBA to a large, commercial facility. With support from community partners and the City of Moreno Valley, a state-of-the-art boxing academy was established at the **Moreno Valley Mall**, where he also partnered with the city to provide training opportunities for local youth.
Drawing from his own experience as a world champion, Garcia brings firsthand insight into elite competition. His approach combines technical expertise, discipline, and respect for the sport, rooted in the long-standing boxing tradition established by his father in Oxnard. His ability to develop fighters across styles and divisions has made him one of the most respected and adaptable trainers in the sport today.
Under his leadership, RGBA represents more than just a gym — it’s a training incubator that fosters excellence while serving the community. The academy offers championship-level instruction alongside mentorship and youth development programs.
Robert Garcia is known for blending technical skill, mental toughness, and humility — qualities he developed growing up in a boxing family and through his own ring career. His guiding philosophy emphasizes that boxing should build both champions and character.
In 2025, Robert and his team founded the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy Youth Foundation, currently training more than 200 boys and girls at the Moreno Valley facility, which opened in March 2025. Through continued expansion, he aims to reach hundreds more local youth, providing them with a safe, positive environment to grow.
Robert’s mission goes beyond developing champions — it’s about giving opportunities to children who may not have the means but possess the same desire and determination he once did.
